To mark the occasion, the Musée du Louvre will exhibit four of the master’s works among its collection of French paintings in the Sully wing, next to old masters whom Picasso studied, such as Le Nain, Chardin and Ingres. The Musée du Louvre is key to understanding Pablo Picasso’s oeuvre. The artist visited the museum for the first time in 1900, during his first trip to the French capital for the World’s Fair. In 1906, it was at the Louvre that Picasso discovered archaic Iberian sculpture when objects found in the Spanish cities of Osuna and Cerro de los Santos were exhibited. The display of Manet’s Olympia, acquired by the Louvre in 1907, played a role in jumpstarting the creative process that would eventually culminate in Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. During the last twenty years of his life, Picasso continued to explore the Louvre’s collections, copying the works of the old masters almost systematically. The story of Picasso’s dialogue with the Louvre has yet to be told. The artist exhibited at the museum on two occasions: in 1947, when the museum received ten paintings that the artist had bequeathed to the State through Jean Cassou, and in 1971, thanks to Jean Leymarie, when some dozen paintings by Picasso were displayed among the Louvre’s collections.
